Welcome to Week 25! OBX SC Make Big Splash at Region 1 A/BB
Championships!
The Outer Banks Swim Club successfully
competed at the A/BB Championships, February 24-26, 2006. Among the swimmers who swam
new qualifying times in order to compete at the Junior Olympics in Radford,
Va., were Drew Keenan and Henry Roach. Roach, an eleven and twelve year old age
group swimmer swam seven new “A” times. His new events include: 200 free (
2:11.03). 200 back (2:30.53), 100 IM (1:09.88) 100 back (1:10.10), 100 free
(1:00.41), 200 IM (2.29.66), 50 free (28.38), 50 back (33.62) and 500
free(5.48.10). The 500 free time should be noted as a new “AA” time standard.
These new times will be added to three other qualifying times he previously swam this year in 50, 100, and 200 breaststroke. He has qualified for twelve
total events in the Junior Olympics.
Another swimmer who has
qualified for the Junior Olympics in Radford is Drew Keenan. Drew competes in
the 13-14 year age group and until this meet had not qualified for the Junior
Olympics. On Saturday, he had a tremendous swim in the Finals in the 50 yd
freestlyle finishing with a time of 25.35, a double A time standard. In the
preliminary trials, he had lowered his entry time of 26.45 to a 26.22. He was
not finished swimming this event. He came back Saturday night and swam a 25.35!
Swimming in the Finals is a difficult process for some swimmers as it requires
them to compete in the morning and race again in the evening. Swimmers must
have a strong endurance base to compete successfully in the Finals. Keenan continued his quest for more “A” times Sunday evening in the Finals. Swimming in
an event that many would call the opposite of the 50 freestyle- the mile or the
1650yd freestyle - Keenan entered the race with a time of 19.43.58 and finished
in the Finals with a time of 19.19.11. This is an A time and qualifies him for
the Junior Olympics in March.
Other swimmers who qualified and
competed in the A/BB Championships this past weekend were: Molly Blazek, Jessica
Cargill, Angela Crotser, Brittney Gibbs, Elise Gibbs, and Arielle Pickrel. The Regional A/BB Championship represents all the swimming clubs in the Tidewater region of
Virginia and several in northeastern North Carolina.
