The Junior and Junior Elites were polled recently and these were their answers. As you can see, many of us swim for different reasons.
I think these answers can help determine your child’s motivation and, perhaps, their progress. As a coach, it can help me understand a swimmer’s lack of commitment or their reasons for good attendance. It takes determination to practice hard on daily basis. When given a choice, most people choose to be comfortable. In swimming a comfortable path is not always possible. Those that continue to come to practice are true champions!! Parents, please remind them that you are proud of their ability to “stick with something” even when they may feel tired or discouraged. I am very proud of them!
Poll “Why do you belong to a swim team?
“Because it makes me strong and I can have big muscles”
“I like to race other people!!”
"I really like to swim. I like how it feels.”
“I like to practice with my friends and sometimes beat them”
“My mom signed me up and I have to come.”
“I wanted to learn how to swim butterfly better”
“There is nothing to do at home- it keeps me from sitting on the couch all the time.”
“ It will make me faster when I get to swim in high school.”
"I just like the feeling of being in the water and practicing new things. I really like how I feel when I am
done!"
