Recently, one of our own YMCA “Sharks” experienced Great Whites from only a few feet away! Tyler Daughtry who has been swimming with the OBX YMCA swim team for three years took a break from swimming in the safe indoor waters of the Outer Banks YMCA to go on an adventure that began with a flight to San Diego, California. There she and her parents boarded the dive boat Searcher and traveled 180 miles south to Guadalupe Island off the coast of Mexico. At anchor, under the constant supervision of the Great White Adventures crew, two shark cages were lowered into the water and for three days Tyler and her fellow divers braved the cool Pacific waters to view Great Whites in their natural habitat. At 11, Tyler was the youngest diver they’ve allowed to participate, and they honored her by naming a new 12 foot shark after her! A trip of a lifetime most of us could only dream about, but one lucky girl will never forget. Now when Tyler needs motivation to swim faster at meets, she can imagine her namesake approaching from behind, jaws open, ready to strike!
